Here's a decent site put together by the ACLU in opposition to the National ID.

Maine rejects the National ID card!

More states, such as Pennsylvania have also rejected the National ID.

The greatest benefit to ID cards is to weed out illegal immigrants more easily. Somehow this argument gets sidetracked for anti-terro reasons

On the opposing side, I agree that a national ID would probably not put a dent in terrorism or fraud.

On the supporting side, I agree that a national ID system wouldn't be a catastrophic invasion of our privacy and freedom by the feds--state ID systems can be and are used just as effectively to track and snoop on anyone who uses them.  A national ID wouldn't suddenly create Oceania.

Since the tie goes to the path of least resistance, I say leave the current system in place for lack of compelling evidence that a national ID would effectively solve problems.
