Privatizing Soc.Sec = stealing

Name: Xel 2007-01-19 11:09

You heard. Listen to Dean Baker.

http://www.prospect.org/deanbaker/2007/01/the_social_security_trust_fund.html#015167

"The most recent projections from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office show that Social Security will have enough money between projected taxes and the bonds in the trust fund to pay all benefits through the year 2046, with no changes whatsoever.

This is very important to understand when someone like Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke proposes cuts to Social Security. Workers have already paid for these benefits. The Social Security tax is very regressive. Its regressivity can be justified by the progressive payback structure of the program. However, if the benefits are cut, at appoint when the program can still easily afford the benefits (e.g. 10-20 years), then the government has effectively stolen from the people who paid Social Security taxes."

Aaaw. Perhaps you can privatize Medicare/aid instead? Because, you know, that is actually important and makes sense.

"Perhaps you can privatize Medicare/aid instead?"

As a libertarian I can probably safely assume I'll agree with medicare privatization or spending cuts on this.  Post a good argument for it in a new thread and I might listen.

As for social security privatization? I'm anti-social security, but FOR paying out the money the government promised to its citizens in the form of benefits.

So to put it in short? I think the government should find a way to pay down the rest of what it owes the people in terms of social security benefits, and then close it down/phase it out over time or something.  I do NOT support closing it down without paying out the promised benefits.  I am a libertarian.

Privatizing social security would be a disaster, it should be done away with all together, its not needed anymore.

Exactly.  But before you do away with it, you have to pay the people what you promised them somehow.  We have lots of stupid programs we could cut to fund it.  Cut money from bullshit foreign aid and other worthless expenditures and divert it to paying down the Social security dues.  Then close it down once everyone has been paid their fair share of promised benefits.

I would like to see the government pay whats due before shutting it down, but it will never happen. It’s a backwards unjust system, I don’t expect it to close in any other fashion.

Privatization wouldn't be stealing if the government paid out the promised benefits.

>>7 'Course not. Didn't say that. But the privatization will take place decently. Not like that mess in Chile that one of Bush's cronies tried to import and impose on Americans.

Some parts of the USA are already benefitting from a privatized social security system.  Too bad the rest of us couldn't be as sensible.
