It's simple logic. A person who has not committed a crime is morally superior to a violent criminal. If you then claim that it is wrong for a certain group to believe it is morally superior to violent criminals, you are essentially saying that the group is equal to or inferior in morality to violent criminals.

All extremists do this. For instance white supremacists claim anyone who is black is wrong to believe they are morally superior to black criminals. It can go the other way around too. Socialists enjoy claiming they are all perfect human beings, they do this by utilising the same fallacy in reverse. By taking their hypothetical utopia full of perfect human beings and claiming it is wrong to think they are not like the people in this imaginary utopia.

He seems to be asserting that many (most?) people who want the death penalty are too weak to carry out the execution themselves, or at the very least watch the ending of a life. The moral superiority or inferiority of the criminals is entirely tangental.
