why is russia such a mess?

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-28 10:00

what went wrong?

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-28 10:09

See 1917.

Name: Anonymous 2006-08-28 12:15

Russia was a mess (from Westen Europe countries POV) since the country was born. 1917 didn't worse things much.

>>3 If only Kerensky and the far more sympatethic liberals would have bit the bullet and been it. I mean, sure Russia was threatened by the German monarchy, but if they had just surrendered, Germany would have lost soon anyway. Instead, Lenin got to throw away half the country to appease the suffering Russian populace, and he had received German funding for just that purpose.

Russia isn't a mess, crime is a problem and the government is authoritarian compared to the west, but it has never been as libertarian as it is today in it's entire history. Crime is very low outside major cities. The economy is recoverring from socialism at the same rate as Poland and the Ukraine and other countries in similiar situations. Recently the Russian economy has been bolsted by China's growth and the increasing cost of crude oil.

apparently infrastructure is quite bad there, quality of roads, hospitals..etc
that would be considered a mess i think.

>>12 Socialistic stagnation, and lack of advancement & progress due to ridiculous levels of taxation/public sector, coupled with a burgeoning population, and overspending on the military, just to name a few.  In the arms race, the Soviets were trying to outdo us militarilly, and we were trying to outdo them.  Reagan became president, and likely knew this, and stepped up our military spending.  The soviets then tried to keep up with us, and it all escalated and probly fucked up their economy more than it already was..

There's probly more to it than this, and I don't feel like getting into specifics.  My two cents for ya.

Yes.. Reagan's policies helped push them over the edge, I agree.

There were many factors, all of them related to libertarian-leaning politicians.

National socialists believe that democracy is weak and cannot solve problems that only a despotism can. Margaret Thatcher's response to the invasion of the Falklands proved that democracy is not weak.

Russia's economy is actually in a state of massive growth at the moment after a long period of stagnation, and as they open up their natural rescources in Siberia etc this will only continue. Russia's prospects are good i reckon in the long run.

Russia's economy largely depends on the liberalisation of their economy in the next decade (for you conservative vs liberal fags, liberalisation in the economy generally means more capitalism, lower tax with a higher proportion of what tax is paid going towards education and training). Russia has already been through the unfuck period and the market economy has set in. A few cheeky souls have become super-rich by capitalising on the privatisation of Russia's major industries however the corruption caused by this is either not apparent or non-existant, otherwise the days of the russian mafia etc.. are coming to a close as Russia seeks to be seen as an up and coming 1st world country.

The irregularities in certain communities in rural Florida that many democrats speak of are hyped up to say the least.  These said irregularities are easilly explained away by looking at past voter trends.. see article.

Shipping all of our industrial infrastructure overseas, turning our economy into a service-based one. Also dependence on foriegn resources (loans, feul, etc).

Yes, because god forbid, it's the foreign governments that are taking the jobs, not American companies shitting on the American people to cut costs.

Don't change these.
