Makes sense? Self defense without gun is very dangerous, especially if the opponent is armed and in 90% cases your average thug has atleast knife. We live in modern age and we have effective tools so why not use them? I don't support death penalty(infact I support lesser penalties), but I support CITIZEN'S(not goverment) right to use deadly force when defending themselves, their family or their property. Death penalty is bad, but citizens shooting criminals in self defense is good thing and it has been proved to reduce crime. It's modern natural selection and I see nothing wrong with it. Violent criminal or robber has chosen his path and that means he should be ready to get shot too. It's true they choose that path typically out of desperation, but no-one forces them.
