WTDWJ: What to do with Jesus

Name: LegendaryNAS 2006-07-01 20:18

A thought...

Christians are taught to follow, serve and worship Jesus Christ since doing so is the only way to absolve oneself of sins. It is because Jesus Christ died on the cross that they are saved.

However, is this just an excuse to place the shame and despair of earthly existence on someone else?

For example, does Jesus not say that "if anyone should follow him, he/she must take up and bear his own cross"?

I am of the opinion that we have humans beings have the potential to be like Jesus Christ and the only way to do so however is by crucifying ourselves. I don't mena this literally though. By crucifying, I mean that we must get rid of our egos and sense of self, such as by having a nervous breakdown.

Discuss...

(BTW, I don't consider myself Christian)

/off-topic.

In my humble opinion, the Christ mythos is allegorical to some sort of cultural/psychological process.

pfft...i dun care much for Christ. I'm a buddhist. I don't see what's the big deal with religion anyways. Isn't it supposed to be more of a personal belief? And yet we have people trying to push their religion onto others. (off topic) ANYWAYS...

...it's human nature to have a "sense of self". We can't get rid of it just because we want to be like one guy who died on a cross. Sure, we can come pretty damn close. But having complete disregard for oneself is pretty friggin hard.

If everyone sacrified themself for everyone else what exactly would be accomplished? Not everyone can be should be exactly like Christ even though aiming for his morals is a pretty good goal.

All christians must take vows of poverty and devote themselves and give all their wealth to charity or they are hypocrites.

When Jesus was crucified, two thieves were crucified next to him. One repented and was saved, the other refused and was not. Clearly "cross" /= sins.

I guess the point is that Jesus was (is) special - the son of God etc. Conceivably an ordinary person could be like Jesus in thought and action but still couldn't atone for his own sins.

"the Christ mythos is allegorical to some sort of cultural/psychological process"
You should elaborate. I am confident a LOT of scholars would love to be able to make this connection credibly.

I must agree, yet Jesus never said that wealth was forbidden to Christians. I suppose the example of Jesus himself and the disciples sets the precedent.

My pleasure. Let's use the thieves you mentioned. One was good, while the other bad. What if we were to look at this in Freudian terms? The bad theif would represent the Id, whereas the Good theif represents the Super Ego. That leaves Christ as the Ego. The ego is said to follow the reality principle which takes into account the limits set by reality and postpones obtainment of pleasure. Wouldn't it be great if we had no desire for pleasure at all. Hence why the Bad theif's eyes were plucked out by the Raven(?).

That article was unneccesarily complex and thus gay and annoying.

Super-ego = Morals and beliefs that people try to follow.
ID = the desire to gain pleasure and avoid pain, animal instincts (for instance freud's idea that everyone subconsciously wants to fuck their parents)
ego = The mediator between the 2 and the observer of reality

Don't change these.
