I think it's just the fear-enducing media of the US that keeps the people armed. The message may not be direct but it's definately there: "If you don't own a gun you're in grave danger." The problems themselves could be smaller than are given out in these ready-chewed pieces of half-entertainment news that americans get every evening. Gee, I wonder how many gun producing companies are among the Forbes 500.
