Governmental DNA database

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-05 20:35

Um, would someone mind explaining what would be so bad about the government keeping a database of the DNA of all its people?  A safe storage of course, and only to be used for law enforcement.

I hear a lot of crap I don't understand like "Boo-hoo, I don't want the government to consider me a criminal in every crime ever committed :'''( *off to cut wrists. the wrong way*"

It should be clear to everyone by now that the government cannot be trusted to respect the privacy of its citizens. Pushing for stricter controls at the governmental level is futile, since the Powers That Be have absolutely no qualms about sidestepping any troublesome rules and regulations that stand between them and their agenda.

The only way for citizens to reclaim their privacy is at the citizen level. The only solution is to start encrypting all data and communications as a matter of course. If every communication is encrypted, the government will not be able to make the argument that 'if you're encrypting, you obviously have something to hide'.

If we want privacy, crypto is the only way to have it in this day and age. If we want crypto to remain legal for citizens, we have to start excercising our right to encryption now, before it is stolen from us. If crypto is outlawed, only outlaws will use crypto.

It's a good idea, but people shouldn't be forced to hand their dna over, it should be optional. If they ae a convicted criminal however it should be mandatory.

I think a simpler solution to solving all crime would be to have city walls and work around that.

I support criminal registry too, but isn't it being done already? As for registering law abiding citizens that's pure police state madness.

If the government were truly accountable to the people, or never made mistakes, then it wouldn't be an issue. However, it largely isn't, and it does.

Democracies don't scale. If you live in a large state, you don't want anyone to have access to something as inherently personal as your own DNA.
