Prison labor

Why isn't prison labor successful?  Even though there are tons of menial tasks, the benefits are rarely enough to outweigh the maintenance costs of prisoners and prisons.  But there are still plenty of menial tasks.  Why not profit from agriculture or mining, for example.

"Chinese use of prison labor is an interesting case study of the interaction between capitalism and prison labor. On the one hand, the downfall of socialism has reduced revenue to local governments, increasing pressure for local governments to attempt to supplement their income using prison labor. On the other hand, prisoners do not make a good workforce, and the products produced by prison labor in China are of extremely low quality and have become unsalable on the open market in competition with products made by ordinary paid labor."

Prison labor here doesn't work because there aren't incentives for prisoners working very hard.

I'm sure you could make some.  Hard workers get the cable TV and gym priviliges, bad workers get to bunk up with the ass rapists, etc.

This isn't just for America, how about Africa since no one wants to get paid to work?

We never want prison labor to compete with private sector. Have to be careful about that. I think all inmates should be lined up and shot.

Why not allow them to pick fruit or mine coal?  Or take up the jobs with the highest risk of death?

Giant hampster wheels that generate electricity for the city.

I thought of that once.  What if fitness centers used the energy from exercise bikes to recharge giant batteries that would slowly gather energy over time, for use in emergencies?  Would it work?

no because the bikes all go at different speeds, at different times, for different lengths of time. It takes energy to store energy, and with all these as well as other factors, you'd end up just wasting energy.

My name is tom and i stayed at a holiday inn last night.
