why I love the West

Name: Anonymous 2006-03-25 16:40

it's because I couldn't exist in any other society. There is no way someone with my views, ideas and interests could develop outside of the western civilisation.

So, on one hand, I dispise a large segment of the west for being mindless, shallow, consumerist cunts (among other things), but at the same time I love it because it made me who I am and I depend on it. The few things that I like are products of the west, and all of the people I like are westerners at least by heart, if not geographical position.

It took me a long time to figure out why I would be willing to defend something that I, in general, don't really like, but this is why.

discuss.

Or are you so far engrossed in your collectivist ideals that you don't recognise individuality?

I don't know about the other guy, but I find people who think that collectivism and individuality are mutually exclusive are idiots. You're an individual. You're also a member of a family, city, country, and culture.

It's also behind most of the cultural and scientific progress in the world.

Uh, no. Take a look how scientists work: while there is personal recognition, the only reason it works is because there isn't a me, me, me! mentality. The Soviets also had some impressive science, even though life was shit.
