Here, you've got the democrats. The party of big spending, big government, and basicially socialist ideals. And you've got the republicans. The party of big spending, big government, and religious nuts. It seems more and more lately that the professional political class in this country that all the presidents up to Theodore Roosevelt have warned us against having, want more and more control over the aspects of peoples' lives to satisfy their own taste for power, and we're letting them get away with it. It just doesn't occur to a good chunk of people that, as individuals, we have a responsibility to take care of ourselves, not let the government do it all for you. During these hurricanes, for example, people complained after the fact, with full knowledge that big hurricanes were coming, that the government was not doing enough quickly enough to help them out. It's not their responsibility, it's the government's... George Bush, the biggest spender in this country's history, has now given the government the biggest expansion of power in years: medicare prescription drug coverage. This plan will cost hundreds of billions of dollars, and who's going to use it the most? Old people in the last few months of their lives. I know that this idea is insensitive, but damn, there's no sense in living at the expense of other people just so you can suffer longer. Full-blown socialized medicine, I have no doubt, will come once Hillary gets the presidency in 2008, god help us. This is the state of American politics...
