Rather than have atheletes waste time playing against each other, why not do something practical, like go to combat and fight in wars? You'd televise the whole thing, and the "best" soldiers (the ones who don't get killed) will have sponsorships and MVP awards. I say it's time we put these jocks to use.
The only real downside is intelligence information. If everything is televised, the opposing side can easily view events, especially if they're live. If they're prerecorded, how long should the wait before airing be? Too long and people discover events on the news months before the show airs. Too soon and the opponent can gather information on location and personnel, even if it's the day before.
