Fucking A. 23 hour lockdown.
I also don't understand why... exactly... violent criminals are allowed to send ENOUGH mail from prison to prison that they can communicate hits, directions for outside activity, etc. Fuck 'em! Only let them send enough mail that the staff can actually screen (never mind drugs and other shit) before sending it out. OR, if you think this is a bit severe, why not apply the above scheme only to those who have been caught doing exactly that sort of thing? Similarly, why not just limit yard time blocks to 5-10 people at a time, who are neighbors, and rotate it so you only get yard time once every week or two? That seems like plenty. Just fucking read books and work out. Hell, I'd get a lot of reading done.
I'm against the death penalty, and I'm aware of the self fulfilling prophecy of the "prison culture", but I don't see why it's unreasonable to make large (not total) changes in the interests of keeping the peace within the prison system. We make ethical "exceptions" in so many other spheres, that we literally shouldn't care how much communication these people have, except insofar as it brushes against the questions of human rights.
Paradoxically, I see no reason why felons shouldn't be allowed to vote.
