The Socialists are the party of weekends and holidays.

(I can't remember the exact quote, for the life of me. It was in an old copy of "Today's Isms".)

socialism does not equal communism

Imagine political beliefs as a square grid, with liberal being on the left, conservative being on the right, authoritarian being on the bottom, and liberatarian being on the top, and centrist being right in the middle.

Communism would be in a bottom left cornerish place, it being both liberal and authoritarian.  However, socialism is not authoritarian, though it is radically liberal.  This is what differs radical conservatives from fascists.  Conservatives are on the right side of the box, and most of them would probably be on the upper side, not wanting government to interfere with their life.  Fascists on the other hand would be on the bottom right side, since they are both radically conservative and radically authoritarian.  Since fascists and communists are both radically authoritarian, a lot of people compare and/or confuse them

The term "Socialism" or "Socialist" can refer to several related things:

   1. An ideology or a group of ideologies.
   2. An economic system.
   3. A state that exists or has existed.
   4. In Marxist theory, the society that would succeed capitalism, and then develop further into communism.

The word dates back at least to the early nineteenth century. It was first used, self-referentially, in the English language in 1827 to refer to followers of Robert Owen. In France, again self-referentially, it was used in 1832 to refer to followers of the doctrines of Saint-Simon and thereafter by Pierre Leroux and J. Regnaud in l'Encyclopédie nouvelle. Use of the word spread widely and has been used differently in different times and places, both by various individuals and groups that consider themselves socialist and by their opponents. While there is wide variation between socialist groups, nearly all would agree that they are bound together by a common history rooted originally in nineteenth and twentieth-century struggles by industrial and agricultural workers, operating according to principles of solidarity and advocating an egalitarian society, with an economics that would, in their view, serve the broad populace rather than a favored few.

Socialism thrives only in homogenic societies.

Exactly. Inequality is cause of all conflict and suffering. Individual uniqueness decreases quality of life despite what religious people say.

So long as genetic differences which manifest themselves as verying levels of intelligence and beauty exist socialism will fail. Some people are just better at life then others and will pull out in front.

Socialism is not about give everybody the same thing. It´s a system to protect the citzen of a country. Private bonds and debentures are a really fine thing in example but not everybody is smart enought to have one. Also it protects people from risks. Everybody can get uneplomyed one day!
Another example would be the health insurance fund. In the USA there are many people who can´t afford a health insurance fund. So wouldn´t it the best to give every citzen a     health insurance fund that fits the basic needs? Everybody has the right to live and this includes health.
It´s not about give everybody the same. If someone wants a single room in a hospital he/she should pay for it.

and pay for it bigtime. Healthcare in Canada, be it slow, repetitive, and lacking of money, is still very good for what it has. When I think about it: Whats more importaint, waiting 7hrs for a cardiologist to come in and give you a percription that can save your life and possibly live much longer, or find out within a year that your heart has givin out and your going to die.....Alot of stress could be taken off the system with a 2 tier system, it is VERY RESTRICTIVLY being used in 1 provence, mainly for scanning, clinics, etc, but it hasnt made much of a big deal. It helps more than the government says. I had a choice of waiting 1 week for a cat scan on my ribs when I broke them, or g2 a clinic, pay 300$, an get myself fixed in a week.
But for the lack of funding per year, spread out over 9 provences, and 3 territories, its damn good

as somebody said, "each according to his abilities."

therefore people can still get along together. there needn't be any competition between completely different people because one of them is much stupider and the other will predictably pull ahead because they will be doing different jobs.

they will still be helping each other in the bigger scheme of things because they are both doing their jobs.

and people can communicate with each other as equals because neither would be economically (and thus politically) equal to each other.

it makes so much sense!

...everyone would be economically...

Communism is a good idea, but there are so many misconceptions about it. I can't even argue in favor of it since I have to explain in excrutiating detail what anarcho-communism is. Even then, many people seem to have trouble understanding what it is. However, communism isn't bad at all, it's just a society without hierarchy, markets, or money that gives all members in society a say in how the means of production are managed.

In communism, all people who contribute what they are capable of contributing receive what they need to live. You wouldn't have to worry about whether you didn't have the money to feed your children if you did your part in a communist society because you would receive part of the product of society.

However, we socialists have no artforms to spread our message other than those creepy propaganda posters Mao used and those aren't exactly effective. As a result, the only thing we have is word of mouth, which does little good against massive corporations that control the media.

Y'all need a new label or two.  "Communism" and "socialism" are discredited terms that cause almost everyone who sees them to think immediately of the Gulag.

Name: Anonymous 2005-03-04 15:31

socialism != communism

Name: Anonymous 2005-03-05 4:18

communism is political
socialism is economical

democracy is political
capitalism is economical

Name: K_x_uksami 2005-03-05 12:13

Actually, communism is a form of socialism. Socialism is just any economy where the workers control the means of production (which means that many "socialist" economies are wrongly named). Communism is a form of socialism where society as a whole as well as the workers owns the means of production and forms of exchange are no longer used.

There are many types of socialism from anarchism, which opposes the state to Marxism, where the workers control the means of production via a "dictatorship of the proletariat", though many Marxists advocate some kind of democracy as an unelected government can't really represent the workers.

Socialism fucking sucks.

I hate paying taxes to feed lazy niggers who smoke crack, get aids and have 10 crack babies with aids each so they can get more money to buy crack from welfare and aids treatment so they don't die from medicaid, FROM MY TAX MONEY yet don't spend welfare money on condoms so they can stop getting aids and pregnant.

Also FUCK YOU OLD PEOPLE, I don't wanna pay taxes so your lazy asses can get paid by SS and get medical care from medicare both funded BY MY TAXES. Who the fuck told you to live so long? Your old ass is supposed to be dead all medicare is doing is keeping you alive so you can cost me more money.

You commies should all move to cuba its full of niggers and old people.

Nice try.

ROFL @ post 26. Apearantly, he will kill himself when he turns 60 or gets aids, doesnt use things called roads and such, and appearntly doesnt think much of other people. Tell me, when was the last time you smiled?

Funny. No really.

Actually, we have been mixed economy (best elements of socialism & capitalism, or see "socialism for dummies" & "How to start your own communist coup for dummies" for further ref.) for the past 30 to 40 years now. We are still here (goodie!) and we arnt doing to bad actually. Ow sure, some of us can pay up to 50% or more income tax. And we pay like 6 to 7 € (?)(about 9 usd?) a gallon (petrol).

But hey, atleast i can go to the best schools, everyone has an income that is sufficiently enough for them to live from and thus indirectly contributing to the society (they do spend that money you know), everyone has acces to the best medical care, those who cannot afford it, will get it from the state, etc.

And still, at the end of the month, i always see a nice figur on my bank account.

And now going back to sage 26. Yes, we are far from perfect, we have our flaws. However, considering the fact that we have some of the lowest criminal, unemployment, drugaddiction, etc., percentages in the world, perhaps it is you who should reconsider your oppinion on things as socialism vs capitalism. Or perhaps even read independant books on it, before you spill your indoctrinated oppinion filled with stupidity about old people and other races.
