Republicans and Wars

Hypothesis: All successful Republican tenures are based on wars, and even many unsuccessful ones. Moreover, these wars either end up failing or having a huge cost in lives.
Examples: Lincoln (Civil War), Nixon (Vietnam), Reagan (War on Drugs, indirectly), Bush Jr. (War on Terrorism/Iraq)
Exceptions: Woodrow Wilson (D) (WWI), Franklin Delano Roosevelt (D) (WWII), Bill Clinton (D) (Gulf War, IIRC; this may be Bush Sr., can't remem)

Gulf War was Bush Sr., of course. The first one (Iran/Iraq+Iran-contra-affair) and the 2. ("The" Gulf War). Also compare: "He tried to kill my daddy."

Iran-Contra's not a war, but the Iran/Iraq war is questionable, since we provided Iraq with weapons. I'll file Gulf War with Bush Sr, though that applies as an exception; it worked fairly well.

Vietnam was more the result of actions by Kennedy and Johnson than Nixon. This hypthesis is worthless. Almost every single president, democrat and Republican has commited troops somewhere. The only ones who haven't are probably the like of Hoover, Taft and Zachary Taylor. Those utterly forgotten by history.

It would seem like if you were going to associate Reagan with any 'war', it'd be the Cold War. Since, now that the old guy is dead he seems to be getting all the credit for bringing that business to a close.

I disagree, and I think that's pretty silly. War isn't necessary, but it simply happens because we aren't perfect, and the larger the country the more our flaws become apparent.

Now I'm not much of a history buff, but let me propose something: As the President is the head of the Executive branch of government and the Commander in Chief of the armed forces, would it be a stretch to say that those presidents who played a part in a war, generally seen by the public as a success, also ended up with some degree of popularity? Grant, Roosevelt, Eisenhower.

Frankly, theres really nothing I can say about Tarage that he hasnt already said about himself... the only comment Id like to make is on 'the liberal slant'. From the rest of the post, I assume that Tarage is referring to the US (is he even aware other countries exist, and not just for target practise?), and I feel i should point out that from a European perspective, US voters have the option to elect either a very conservative president or an <i>insanely</i> conservative president.

What "liberal slant" do you speak of? Nobody's biased here. There was a bad judgement call in the beginning of the topic, but that was it. To draw liberal slant from that makes you worse than Bill O'Reilly (who, I might add, spends his time off camera chasing secretaries for poon).

The fact of the matter is, however, that Republican Presidents are war time (and sometimes war creating) Presidents, pure and simple. Whether the result is good or bad (and, IMVFHO, it's been fucking miserable since WW2), it's the truth.

Your're probably confusing Franklin Roosevelt with Theodore Roosevelt who, after his presidency had ended, unsuccessfully ran again some years later as an independent candidate for the Bull-Moose Party. He garnered the most votes percentage-wise of any third-party candidate in history, but it was not enough. FDR was a democrat for the entirety of his administration.

The most wrong thing about this thread involves Lincoln. I've met a shitload of republicans that insist that before the 60's they were the champions of equal rights but then they stopped when they realised enough is enough. The fact is, the vast majority of republican politicians that are old enough to've been in the game before the 60's were democrats and fighting against civil rights at the time.

The republican party when Lincoln was president probably had more in common with the democrats today. Hell, the entire civil war was proof of that. The republican party is supposedly about states rights and anti-big government, but Lincoln started an entire war to deny them their right to secede.

It seems the case that some posters are not aware of the nature of the human condition: we are always fighting for somthing.
It could be a parking space, or forign lands; either way, humans are constantly fighting.
As for Republicans using wars as the only means of advancing an agenda is silly. Both parties use what ever they can to advance their agendas. To say that one side does and the other does not is foolish. In order to declair war, now, there needs to be an act of Congress. That means members of both parties voted for military action, not just one or the other. What this question is realy about is the Iraq war.
Both sides are using this "war" as a political tool. The Dems want to appear to be strong on the war on terror and in support of the military but not siding with the President; essentialy wanting it both ways. The Republicans want to support the war but appear to be in conrtol of everything that goes on in Iraq and to make it all  good news for the US. This is just as immpossible as the goals of the Dems.
