Scammers try to profit in Sichuan quake aftermath

PAIN : A woman, supported by her children, grieves as she mourns the death of her husband, killed in the 7.0 earthquake that hit Lushan in Sichuan, China

POLICE in China warned people on Sunday to be careful of online requests for help among postings related to the Sichuan earthquake.

The disaster killed at least 188 people and injured tens of thousands.

But some scammers are trying to turn a profit from the disaster, reported China Daily.

Police in Shaanxi province and the Jiangning district of Nanjing, Jiangsu province, have posted notices on their micro blogs listing online requests for help that proved to be false.

One online message apparently called for the public's help in finding Ms Xu Jing, a 21-year-old woman who supposedly had to go to a hospital in Ya'an, Sichuan as her mother was seriously injured in the earthquake.

But a telephone number listed for readers to call with information would charge excessive fees.

Return home

In another message, one Zhou Yugun, 17, was asked to return home because Zhou's mother was badly injured in the earthquake. This message also had a listed number to call.

The two messages were widely spread on Sunday via instant messaging software, micro blogs and WeChat, a mobile phone text and voice messaging communication service.

The police asked people to stop forwarding these messages on the Internet.

Don't change these.
