Is Bin Laden still alive?
news from all around the world are talking about Bin Laden's  upcoming new message. The US gov stated that "Capturing or killing Bin Laden is top priority".
Is this another attempt to terrorize US citizens and get more funds for the military?
How can an old man escape all the western nation's military and intelligence? Where the hell is he?

If the US military would only put a sniper outside the building where bin Laden periodically collects his CIA paycheck ....

Well he used to be on the pay roll, but now he is off it I think.

Firstly, it does seem kinda odd that UBL puts out a viddy every year around election time.

Secondly, there are two reasons we can't catch UBL

1.)  We're trying to catch him using technology.  We're trying to trace his cell phone, catch him on satillite, and shove a cruise missle up his ass.  The problem is that he's fairly low tech.  He uses pieces of paper handed to couriers, not his brand new iPhone.  He's living in a cave, and he probably doesn't leave it much.  He doesn't use credit cards, he uses something called "barter" which is impossible to trace.  So we're using methods that aren't going to catch UBL -- in fact, if you wanted to look like you're trying to catch him without being able to, high tech toys is the way to go.

2.)  He's being protected in the tribal regions of Pakistan.  Pakistan is at least nominally our ally, and so we can't go into Pakistan.  It would make Musharrif less of an ally.  And we don't want that.  Musharrif won't get him because he doesn't want the taliban to come after him.

So UBL is safe.

On point #1, you're just telling me the US military is unable to catch a man who is fighting like the Japs did on Iwo Jima.  who won Iwo Jima?  Oh, yeah, the US MILITARY.  Why not just come out and say that the US military isn't actually trying to catch Osama bin Laden, and have done with it?

On point #2, I've heard the "move" theory for years now.  OBL moved to Pakistan, not Afghanistan, so that gives us reason to invade Pakistan.  Hussein's WMDs moved to Pakistan, so that gives us reason, etc.  "Insurgents" (i.e. freedom fighters) are coming from Iran, so that etc. etc. etc.

All this is just the US military playing the Luftwaffe's game.  Strike and move inward.  However, the grinning chimp in the White House isn't even competent enough to actually conquer anything.  He's too busy getting smacked around by Cheney (remember that pretzel incident?).  He mouths the words of further invasions but doesn't actually do them; he sits in his half-conquered territories and tries to sit tight, while the troops get shot at and blow up, and the oil continues to flow.

Well, for one thing he isn't fighting numbnuts, that's why we can't catch him.  He's *hiding*, he isn't riding out with an AK-47 gunning for the Marines.  He's blending in with local tribesmen in Pakistan.

Secondly, from what I gather, the USA Millitary isn't in those regions anymore.  What we have going over Tora Bora and Western Pakistan is a remote controlled airplane.  So it isn't that easy to pin the man down.

The airplane thing is retarded for a couple of reasons.  First, technology can't substitute for boots on the ground or imbedded spies.  All OBL has to do to avoid being spotted by the aircraft is *be inside when the plane goes by*.  We're monitoring his cell phone and his e-mail.  Easy to avoid.  Write a fucking letter, tie it to a goat, and pay a shepard $5 to lead the goat to town and send the letter.

The problem we have -- and honestly I think its cultural -- is that we think that throwing enough technology at a problem will solve it.  It won't, and in this case, it makes it very easy for Osama to blend in to a low-tech tribe and not have to worry about getting spotted beyond hiding from a drone every few hours.  We need more spies, more arabic speakers, more double agents -- people who can pick up on the roumors of OBL.  That's the only way to stop terrorism -- have a mole in the cell.  There's no substitute for the human touch in this case.

Well, I'd agree with you on Iran, however, with pakistan, the only person even talking about sending in SF troops is Obama.  If we were using Osama in Pakistan as a pretext to invasion, why aren't we talking about invading?  In fact it's pretty much the excuse for why we *can't* get bin Laden "He's in Pakistan, and Pakistan is our friend.  So until he leaves, we can't do anything".  So no, OBL in Pakistan isn't about invaasion.

You make good points yet I must insist on countering the rest:

1. Leaders don't fight, but they are in the chain of command, and part of the war effort is to enact intelligence gathering.  If the US military was really fighting this war to take down Al Qaeda, they'd have arrived at an approximate location of OBL some time ago from collecting intelligence.  Remember also that according to the "911 Report", Pakistan was making significant efforts in tracking down all kinds of terrorists who were seeking to operate freely within its borders.  True, Pakistan does have enough of their sympathizers to complicate that mission, but for a high-profile guy like OBL, a multiyear effort would ferret him out.

I just don't believe he can so successfully hide for so long in any Middle Eastern state, especially one as unstable as Pakistan.  Someone high up can be protecting him, however, and that can remarkably throw the issue.  Since the case for the entire war is built upon many lies, I find it more likely that my own government is lying to me about OBL than OBL is avoiding capture.

2. If the US military is not in those regions, then that's more evidence that Bush and the Neo-Cons have no real interest in obtaining justice for 911.

I must agree with you about the plane-n-boots problem.  Men on the ground is a better option for actually ferreting OBL out, and considering nearly 180K US troops exist for the purpose, there is a remarkable lack of explanation from the US government now.

If we actually had US military officers running things as you indicate they should be, OBL should be captured within 3 months, perhaps 6 (depending on the speed of infiltration).  If he's in Pakistan, at least his rough position could be determined, and Pakistan's previous willingness to ferret such guys out for the West should be leaned on until they relent and actually go and get him.

It's just not convenient for the USA to find and catch Osama Bin Laden. He's a fucking propaganda machine.

It wasn't Bin Laden. It was Tony Snow in a fake beard.

No, since capturing Hussein didn't mean the US would GTFO out of Iraq.

Bin Laden only did it for the attention.

As Osama said to his followers as they watched the sun set over the Pakistan mountains: "We fight them in Iraq so we don't have to fight them over here."
