in terms of defense budget, yes, we have the second largest next to the US.
but, you need to know the fact that budget does not reflect the nation's defense capabilities. for instance, japan's arms production and labor cost is way beyond that of China, which has enormous offensive military power.
yes, we have 100+ F15s and 3 Aegis ships, but they are under strict control of USF for what they call "inter-operability" with the US.
approximately, 25% of our defense budget is spent for USF in japan. japan's expense for USFJ is ten times larger than that of NATO nations combined, believe or not.
see my point? our self-defense force is not a "military." do we have liberty to build up our own defense? NO! fortunately or unfortunately...i don't know.
