On the other side of the spectrum it also helps if you're black. I don't know what it is- but Japanese don't seem to mind blacks much and nether do Chinese. If you're some other weird race- Korean, Mexican, South American, Arab...you might get looked at differently. Basically...if you're an "Americanized" race...you have nothing to worry in Japan outside of what >>48 pointed out.
