Why the heck would insurgents want Saddam out? Saddam kept them at bay for years. They only ran rampant after his regime fell. Not saying it's a bad thing, that it fell, but things are certainly more chaotic now than before. I'll assume you just grouped him in there for effect, since you're right, they CAN'T get out now. A fine mess that is.
Whether or not you say it is not a war on Islam doesn't change the fact they believe it is. There are more insurgent terrorists pouring into Iraq now than there ever was before. Afganistan a terrorist hideout? Fine. Iraq? Don't think so. What happened to those WMDs we were promised? Some of those bombers were native Brits. Is England a terrorist hideout?!?
Attack a well armed military guy or a hapless civilan, which gets more attention? I think that's pretty obvious. Islam or any religion for that matter can be easily twisted to suit your needs. No, it doesn't say to kill everyone, but what about infidels? Now, define infidels. It is cheap justification, but so what? Western society is picking away at its culture. Maybe it's hard to understand they don't want that. Now they can sit back, watch things crumble and relatively few Westerners would die. Or they could take up arms, hit easy targets, and die fighting in futility. You can call it stupid or fighing in what you believe in.
