The US millitary is great at killing but bad at making sure only bad guys get killed. This isn't an isolated incident, but it almost certainly wasn't intentional.

Why american troops are so worried and have such itchy trigger fingers is beyond me. They have vastly supperior equipment, the number of them dying daily is tiny considering their troop strength in iraq and way more iraqis (both combatants and civillians) get killed by them than the other way around. They need to toughen up and get stricter rules of engagement to stop killing randomly (themselves and civilians).

"The Italian journalist wounded by American troops in Iraq after her release by insurgents rejected the U.S. military's account of the shooting and declined Sunday to rule out the possibility she was deliberately targeted. The White House said it was a "horrific accident" and promised a full investigation. Meanwhile, an autopsy performed on the agent who died trying to save Giuliana Sgrena reportedly showed he was struck in the temple by a single round and died instantly"

This still could be a tragic accident, right?  To continue:
" Suddenly, she said, she remembered her captors' words, when they warned her "to be careful because the Americans don't want you to return."

Sgrena wrote that her captors warned her as she was about to be released not to signal her presence to anyone, because "the Americans might intervene."

170+ journalists have died in Iraq.  More than Korea and Vietnam combined.  Perhaps she WAS targeted (And a bullit in the temple of the man that negotiated her release sure SOUNDS targeted).

America has a great deal to gain by controlling what you see and hear.  Also, Italy is the LAST country of any size except Britian that's still got troops there.  And most Italians want them out.

Still, why would the US want them dead?  Perhaps because releasing her might make the insurgents seem a wee bit less like the unhuman demons the reich-wing NEEDS them to be to keep selling this crap, and the dead Italian officer who negotiated the deal might keep on doing it?  Very bad PR for Bush.
