It's true, most of politics is empty symbolism.  But I was speaking specifically of the Republican habit of making a big theatrical fuss out of introducing a half-baked Constitutional amendment as a response to some hot-button issue of the moment, which they quietly drop the moment the public's attention shifts to something else.

As far as I know, the Democrats haven't introduced any wacky Constitutional amendments for a while.  Yes, both parties do lots of sleazy and stupid things--which is why I no longer vote, and consider American politics solely as a source of free entertainment.

I was thinking specifically of the idea of Constitutional changes, see.
