Huge turnout, only a few voters blown up. The Sunnis must be pissed.

That's how news headlines should be written. Short, sweet, to the point.

Ooo, "more than 30" killed by insurgents, out of the millions who voted, according to NPR.

I'm impressed with that Shiite high mucky-muck Sistani, who told the Iraqis that husbands may not tell their wives how to vote. That's pretty damn classy for that part of the world.

The sunnis tried to stop sunnis from voting. They succeeded. Kurds and shiite voted in vast numbers. Now sunnis are underrepresented and the election has no legitimacy in the eyes of sunnis.

So what? The sunnis are tired; the shiite and kurds are wired.

shiite scholars are suprisingly libral for muslims. They are light years ahead of your typicial saudi cleric. Yet as mooslims far far behind the civilized world.
The Sunnis are all acting like big babies. "Saddam liked US best! Waaaaaaaa! We want to be in charge! WE LIKE SUPPRESSING THE MASSES WAAAAAAA! Any government that WE'RE not in charge of IS STUPID!"

actually the sunnis did a good job keeping down the shiites
shiites run syria? You are a stupidman. the secular sunni arab socialist (fascist) ba'ath party runs syria. iran and syria are best friends only because they always loved hizbollah, always hated sadam and are now hated by the USA together.

shiites run iran but they are persian shiites not arab shiites... there is a major difference
syria has fallen under the influence of iran through convenience and iran has a shiite agenda. hizbolla is a shiite group using religious fundamentalism as their motivator not secular baath ideals
syria's top level administration is sunni baath but shiite religious fundamentalism is rampant in the actual population, and certainly dominant within their close ally iran
the vast majority of the worlds muslims are shiites, sunnis had disporportionate power recently in a handful of arabic oil states but they are quickly losing it to fundamentalist shiites
the bulk of the sunni population by volume is in africa and indonesia, these are not arabs and are not important to persian gulf oil dynamics... the persian gulf states being the region currently in focus
all persian gulf oil states currently in contention are predominantly arab, with iran being almost 100% shiite and iraq quickly reaching those proportions, the ultra-benign united arab emirates is almost completely shiite as well.. syrias population is very small relative to iran or iraq but they as well have a fast growing shiite population now that sunnis are being mostly run out of the gulf states, there is momentum in the contented region for the shiites... and they happen to be more the martyr-centric and fundamentalist of the islamic factions

Their loss, I'd dispatch an international STFU for them.

Here's one who knows how to interpret election results. 15 wins the thread.

You share the winnage. It's just me, or Iraq was much better (i.e. much less of a problem for the world) with saddam housein in power? (Rethorical question. No need to answer.)

Seeing as there are now these rumours about talks with sunnis... America really screwed the pooch. If elections bring into power theocrats, what use are they? There is no secular republic in Iraq, and it's civic institutions are weak - shia turn to their learned clerics and mosques, not to public meetings with open discussion(or technocratic rule that supplements it).
