I've heard they suck, but a good friend of mine likes them, so I'm thinking about giving them a chance. Also, are they really emo? I like some emo (Sunny Day Real Estate and Cloud Nothings), so I'm just curious.
What do you care about a band being 'emo' or not? The fuck? If you like something you should listen to it regardless of what the people around you think.
I remember their most critically acclaimed record was 'welcome to the black parade'.
it wasn't as self-commiserating as emo, but the guy screams too fucking much.

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was so much better than the Black Parade.

My ex-gf loved them. Not my cup of tea, but for most women and some men they seem to really follow that group. I am more into depressive black metal and slamming brutal death. We all have tastes.

They have good and bad tracks. I like random songs from random albums.
But the fact that they did a shitty cover of Under Pressure pisses me off.

They're amazing, OP. Ignore the hate, I love them bunches.
General alt-rock instrumentation with lyrics that try really hard to be dark and talk of death but just come across as disingenuous and childish. First albums is good for a raw and actually slightly dark sound, second album is alright but there is clearly more aesthetic and emphasis on graves and ghosts and shit in it. The Black Parade is their "grandest" product but its also sort of a darker sounding Queen rip off with more amateur vocals than Freddie Mercury had ever performed. Their latest album most likely is not worth your time, but if you do get into them, go there last. this is coming from somebody that called MCR my favorite band for years before my taste developed and I matured.

I think it's a good band indeed. When I was younger I really disliked them, but the time change us and I ended my prejudice about those guys, but I still think they are kind childish in some aspects about lyrics and some musical structures, but it's impossible to don't sing along thank you for the venon or shake a leg listening hang em' high.

I'm not very familiar with MCR's work, actually. I know I listened to some of their songs way back when, but I never truly got into them. They just seem like alt-rock and post-hardcore, not really emo like bands such as Sunny Day Real Estate or American Football.
New MCR completely sucks ass. Listen to The Black Parade and every album before.

Their new album makes me want to punt children. It's absolutely atrocious. Their first three, however, were really good. My favorite was Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. In my opinion it was their best work.

In a 1 to 10 scale of how terrible they are I'd say around 3. I don't really enjoy their new album but even those songs sounded amazing live. They are a great band, I've seen smaller bands being bigger assholes, so they have my sympathy. As for their music, my fav album is Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge perfect from the first to the last minute.
And no, they are not emo at all, not even reminiscent, so don't expect any sunny day real estate or Jimmy Eat World.

MCR is as bad as 4chan. They just scream obscenities into the microphone and people cheer to it.
