I'm just starting out in the realms of "good" music.
I like Arcade Fire, Neutral Milk Hotel, Los Campesinos!, The Antlers, Be Your Own Pet, Bloc Party, Bright Eyes, Broken Social Scene, Death Cab for Cutie, Mogwai, Phoenix & Sleigh Bells.

(ignore pic comment, it was failing to post on /mu/ so i came here)
First, do you smoke weed? That does kind of help in getting into music properly. Then you will need Can's Tago Mago album, quite accessible except for the middle bit. Then Pink Floyd's first album "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" (This is when Syd Barrett was the main guy before he went crazy). Then Captain Beefheart's "Safe as milk". I'd also recommend some things like 13th floor elevators, and maybe a compilation such as "Nuggets" (A 60s psychedlica album)...
Also some Black Sabbath is worth checking out.

Benjamin Jameson Morey has a really nice song, "Couches in my Head" that you might like. It's nothing like Sleigh Bells or Be Your Own Pet, but it is kind of like Death Cab and Los Campesinos.
Also, for some reason, I always connect Los Campesinos with The Wombats even though they don't really sound alike, but I do enjoy both.
Also, try the Billionaires. Their album, Really Real For Forever was wonderful. Here's a link to their song, "Eighties Movies" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbz2yKcqZIc

Oh OK then I'll say Moondog and the soundtrack to Forbidden Planet.
