I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the possibility of going for a PhD for Music to become a professor?

I'm not dumb enough to live the life of a "starving artist" that based on the crappy mainstream probably won't make it, but I still love music (more specifically, the Blues). I'm great but that shit generally isn't mainstream, and I currently do it as more of a hobby then anything, and I can't spend as much time as I might normally like on it because of my other science studies in college.

Is it worth going into music and getting a PhD to become a professor in it (which is at least a pretty solid job to get at that point especially since I'll probably be good at it since I have the initial talent + love for it and can invest so much time in it at that point), or should I just forget it?

(sidenote: I know several instruments and can sing at least well enough to do backup, and have had music education since elementary school, being able to sight read and having some basic Music Theory knowledge, so I do have some background. Not just talking out of my ass ``durr i liek music")

Do whatever you want in college. Have music (or start a musical career) as a second thing. That way you will have a solid degree but still have music as a possablilty.

Dexter Holland from  offspring, has a degree in Biology or something, and now hes in a decent band.

(sorry for the bad English)

The best professor I have ever had in university taught music classes.  He displayed a passion for music in every lecture and it really made the class enjoyable for all students.

You should talk to some professors in your music and arts department.  They will give you the best advice even if its a little bias.
