Actually, I think it'd be more accurate to say he wanted to be James Dean or Oscar Wilde, and ended up as a bizarre cross between the two.

At least the smiths were fantastic.

Shame about his solo work though.

"You are the Quarry" had some good tracks I thought, "America is not the World", "Irish Blood, English Heart", "I Forgive You Jesus", "The First of the Gang to Die", and "Let Me Kiss You".
