Guitar for beginners

Name: Anonymous 2006-10-20 19:30

I posted this on /b/ but they laughed at me and threw copypasta.

So I've never touched an instrument in my life, but i've always wanted to. I love metal, so I want to learn to play an electric guitar. What do I need to know?

is this a good deal?

Can anyone relate their 'how I learned' stories?

I stole my neighbor's guitar and just fucked around with it, eventually I learned how to properly (or so I thought) use strings and shit. ..But, yea, that looks like it might be good.. Maybe.. I still don't know what the fuck anything on my guitar is called, or how to read notes...

stunning advice, anonymous.

Tablature will be important if you want to play songs you've heard before.  I assume you know how to read guitar tab sites?  How much of what on the guitar makes what noise do you know?

Also, you'll want to buy a tuner.

Or you could just play out of tune all the time and call it an "innovative" and "groundbreaking" new genre.

Word of advice, avoid Behringer, I've nothing but bad things about quality control, and besides they're mostly an audio electronics company which calls into doubt the quality of that guitar...

Besides, if you wanna play metal, go for a guitar with humbuckers!

Also avoid starter kits, the amp invariably sucks. Instead go for something like this...

With this amp...

And this tuner...

The amp above has pretty good digital modeling, and is a great practice amp, I use one myself, I also use the tuner, but I have nicer guitar, a Red Fender Stratocaster.

Also http://guitargeek.com/ has some great forums.

Well, I bought my guitar, and I printed out some tabulatures. I spent alot of time practicing, and after a year, I started playing quite good. The guitar doesn't really matter. I actually played half a year on the acoustic guitar, and now I produce songs for my  band: http://www11.nrk.no/urort/user/?id=53815

I had experience from the orchestra, of course, so that might have helped. But really, it's just to try it out. you'll manage if you practice

its easy like radiohead say anyone can play gter go for it, iv been playing 10 years gets easier and easier, doesnt reslly matter what u start on, acoustic is harder but improvesur fingers more. but for metal i guess ud want t start elec.

Never bothered with a tuner. Just memorized the opening note of Nothing Else Matters and worked around that.

Starter packs are invariably horrible, and Behringer in particular make me cringe. If you can find an actual Squier/Fender starter in its place, they'd be better.

When i starter nigh-on 5 years ago, i just found some songs i liked with simple guitar parts (The Hives, Union Underground), got the tabs and figured out how to play it without hurting myself.

Dont expect to be all Iron Maiden in 5 months, but keep practicing regularly, learning chord progressions and scale patterns slowly, then till you can do it without looking down, then faster and faster.

After maybe 9months to a year, you will want to invest in mid-range guitar, which mostly depends on your taste in appearance. Also, dont go overboard on accessories. You probably dont need that Machinehead turner or pick-holder. A tuner, some Fastfret (which i now swear by), 3 picks, cables, strap, and thats it.

I actually bought the stuff that this guy suggested and i've been playing around with it for about a week. I can play twinkle twinkle little star. ><;

I'd suggest always praciticing with a metronome.  Otherwise, when you learn something you'll tend to play the easier parts faster and you'll have a poorer sense of timing.
