He's only a scientologist because he was born into a scientologist family. He dosen't even know that much about the religion.

"Further confirmation came in an interview with the Irish Sunday Tribune newspaper's i Magazine in June 2005, where he is quoted as saying, "Yeah, I'm a Scientologist. My father has been a Scientologist for about 35 years, so I grew up in and around it." When questioned, he was vague on Scientology's core beliefs."
I think it's a very elaborate joke. Beck is too sensible to be a Scientologist, even raised around it at one point he would have said, "wait, thetans are fucking alien souls?? what the fuck?!" I mean come on, sensible people do it with christianity and other religions that are actually religions.

Umm hmm I don't know much about Beck. I know Moby is pretentious, fucking tree-hugging emo-hippy. The few instances I've seen of Beck, he seems like a laid-back, relaxed guy who enjoys fun. Or maybe he really is a stick-in-the-mud?
In before "that's not mud"

He thinks that he's a genius and his dumb, fresh out
of high school fans agree because they've never been exposed to anything else that isn't on repeat 30 times a day on MTV.

Beck started out as a great artist, in my opinion. But, things have gone a bit sour for him. It used to be about using the alternative sound to mix popular music with world music. But, I can understand what you're getting at, some artists just get a little TOO popular and it gets to them. I don't care about the fact that he's scientologist, at least he's not Cruisian scientologist, but he does have a pretty big ego.
And don't fucking diss Devil's Haircut. That was a pretty good song.
But, no, Odelay is not a word.

His new CD sounds like one big drum-loop orgasm. And not even a good one, it's really messy and everything.

I don't think pretentious is even a real musical critisism.
don't know if he's pretentious or not, but in the time of chimpanzees he was a monkey

Beck wasn't pretentious until he lost his sense of humour (around Sea Change) Everything since has a air of 'seriousness' about it.
HIs best stuff is his early pisstaking stuff (93-96). Download "Heartland Feeling" from Golden Feelings if you like hearing someone make fun of Bruce Springsteen/John Cougar Mellencamp, lol.

I never really got the impression that he thought he was so supergreat and above other artists and all those other qualities that would combine to form pretention. Sure, he's artsy, but not supercilious.

What the hell are you talking about? Going on a silly not/serious binary, he made
Stereopathetic Soul Manure [not serious]
One Foot in the Grave [serious]
Mellow Gold [not serious]
Odelay [not serious]
Mutations [serious]
Midnite Vultures [not serious]
Sea Change [serious]
Guero [not serious]
(Guerolito) [not serious]
Information [not serious]
Come on.

Fuck you, pretentious is a horrible word. And no, I find him to be the same as any other goddamned artist.
And I'm not so sure about Mutations being serious, but I could be wrong.

Pretentious is only a horrible word if you don't know how to use it, i.e. indiscriminately. Otherwise its overly insulting connotation inhibits usage.
