Question - Modes of Music

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-02 1:19

I know C Major has the notes

CDEFGAB

I also know that the modes Ionian, Dorian, Mixolydian, etc. are the same basic scale but with certain notes dropped half a step.

What I need to know is the order of all the modes, and more importantly in what order the notes are flatted. For example, if the first mode flats the 5th, then the second mode adds on a flat to the 7th, then the third mode a flat to the third, etc. Only what they really do instead of guesses.

Thanks

1- ionian, 2 - dorian, 3 - phrygian, 4- lydian, 5-mixolydian, 6-aeolian (not sure on spelling of that), 7-lochrian. the first mode has no flats, it is simply the major scale. dorian has b3, b7 so for example C Dorian would be C,D,Eb,F,G,A,Bb,C. phrygian has b2, b3, b6, b7. lydian has b5 (but really #4 since there is a natural 5 in the lydian scale). mixolydian has b7. aeolian has b3, b6, b7. lochrian has b2, b3, b5, b6, b7. hope that helps
