Good video game music has to have that j-pop melody structure to it, such as Tohshiden.  Orchestra stuff such as the Final Fantasy songs are good as well.  I really liked PS1 Doom's ambient soundtrack.  No vocals.

Castlevania music rox but also Dark Cloud music and Street Fighter II midis were awesome.
I liked a lot Guile, Ryu and Dhalshim's themes.

You don't like TAITO?
Have you searched ZUNTATA on youtube.com?

I'm not >>1 but I have posted twice in this thread.
Zuntata is nuts, OGR is sick, and Darius Gaiden is very win.
I have not looked for stuff like that (or searched for anything really) on youtube, thanks for the suggestion.

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-31 0:20

#R is different cuz its by a Korean

Name: Anonymous 2006-05-31 22:31

I personally like the soundtracks from the Sonic Adventure and Ridge Racer games.

Name: Nightmare Kitty 2006-06-08 2:38

I like Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy stuff.  I like how he goes between doing very electronic stuff and then goes towards heavily orchestral/traditional sounding music.  And a lot of it is very powerful.  FF just won't be the same without him, though arguably it's gone to hell anyways, what with how X-2 was...

I also like the music for Katamari Damacy, just because it's so over the top and cheesy, and it knows so. :D

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-10 3:19

Did anyone else here go to "PLAY!"?

I did. It was good. And for the record, the best piece was the Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross suite. You can't hear a live rendition of Time's Scar with a crazyass guest percussionist and not like it.

Name: Anonymous 2006-06-10 18:45

Just like the other guy I like the soundtrack to Sonic Adventure. However ridge racer is not much my cup of tea.

Crush 40 is the J-Rock band for Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Sonic Heroes, and Shadow The Hedgehog game, too.

I can guarantee you Yuzo Koshiro is better.
In fact I am convinced the only reason half the people who likes the series was for the work he did for the sound of the first game, which is admittedly great, though I cannot comment on anything past it.

Tomb Raider,Chrono Trigger,Final Fantasy XI.

As far as fighting games go Guilty Gear has some fantastic music.  Never fails to get me pumped for a few hundred rounds.

In the realm of RPGs you can't beat Yasunori Mitsuda's work.  Xenogears was a fantastic game in part because of Mitsuda's music.
Lunar also had some great music that was really inspiring.

Mitsuda is decent, but is way more than possible to find better compositions in an RPG than his, he's way better than Nobuoverrated, however that really isn't saying all that much.

Final Fantasy VIII and some of VII

Also Donkey Kong Country 2

Name: Xel 2006-07-20 13:01

>>52 Donkey Kong Country 2 had owning music. The entire series wins but the second game comes out on top.
I need to play a heckload of FF... I would dl it but all torrents suck ass when it comes to retro-gaming.
Oblivion has great, epic, majestic but repetitive and not very varied music. It's much like the actual game.

Name: Anonymous 2006-07-23 19:06

Uhh.. Doom, that shit is awesome to kill monsters too..

"Duh duh duh doo doo da da!!" (Kaboom blast off the head of some fuck hellbeast)"duh duh duh da!!"

That music, is by far, the best music in a video game. Simply because it does something that other video game music doesn't do, it adds a significant identifiable emotional experience to the game that modern graphics or high-compression rates can never do.

That's what I think, anyways.
