I'd say mine goes on 2 close-calls and one definite.
Close call 1: Led Zeppelin (Talented hacks)
Close call 2: Rolling Stones(Do I even need to explain?)
DEFINITE BEST: Velvet Underground. These Welsh-posers even tried to not just to entertain, but to challenge, to prove that rock ānā roll could be dangerous again. I wish I had gone to high school with these dudes so I could've let them fuck the shit out of me.

Led Zeppelin really didn't introduce anything new to the world. All they did was take the blues and make it more mainstream.
The Stones were just a carbon copy of the Beatles sound to begin with, only after Beggar's Banquet did they become what most people recognise them as.
And Velvet Underground just plain suck.
I would say The Ramones, but they owe a lot to numerous bands before them.
Which kind of illustrates an important point about music: It's easy to point out what bands stifle innovation, but a lot harder to say which bands are important, as they usually take a lot of influence/inspiration from bands that came before.

you just have to find the reverse bottlenecks, those who were influenced by older shit but then popularized that particular set of influences or something
ps. Devo is my nomination, for no good reason aside from the fact that WE ARE DEVO!

Metallica. Say what you like, but these guys wrecked metal for the rest of eternity by influencing bands with their horrendous post-sellout sound. I think that's a pretty big influence

What the fuck is wrong with this thread? Why hasn't anyone mentioned Pink Floyd yet? And THE best band doesn't exist, it all comes down to your personal taste, but I'm gonna list a few anyway:
Pink Floyd - I think no arguing here, they are simply one of the best bands that ever existed and if you don't agree with me, you have no taste in music
Led Zeppelin - Great, great music, although some of their songs kinda suck until Jimmy Page starts playing
Black Sabbath - Their influence especially on Metal (they nearly created this genre on their own) and music in general is undeniable. I've seen them live last year and it was incredible. Those guys could be my granddad's granddads and they still rock.
Deep Purple - Listen to their album "Machine Head" and you know why they're in this list
Queen - Everybody knows them, everybody loved them, and for a reason: Great music, great live show
Nirvana - They haven't done a single song which sucks in my opinion
Metallica - Created the best metal album ever, "Master Of Puppets". Today they're only making crap though.
Oh yeah, I'm not gonna list the Beatles here. Why not? They were the Backstreet Boys of the 60ies which just happened to learn some stuff about music along the way. Their first albums are really crappy and the only thing they did was help other bands emerge.
Hmm, probably I forgot some bands, ah whatever

When I see "happened to music" I think in terms of influence over future generations. In that case, Velvet Underground is about the most perfect choice, because they were the largest band at the genesis of underground music in new york, which has opened so many doors for indy rock and hip-hop. And BTW, Velvet Underground would be one of those badns that the Ramones owe so much to, #2.
The Cure, if only to be able to make fun of goths. Seriously, listen to the song "Why Can't I Be You", find a goth whose favorite band is the Cure, and laugh your fucking ass off.

I don't get goths either. I mean "gothic" is only supposed to be a sort of syle of architecture or clothing, right? That I can understand. But literally just obsessing over death and such...
the #1 best musician to ever live is a man named Frank.
Frank Sinatra.

STOP! Syllogisms time!
Frank Sinatra is a man.
A man is not a band.
Therefore, Frank Sinatra is not a band.
This thread is about the best band to happen to music ever.
Frank Sinatra is not a band.
Therefore, Frank Sinatra cannot be the best band to happen to music ever.

...that could change. If only Frank could crawl out of his grave, pick up a guitar, get the ratpack back together and call themselves "The Frank Sinatras". I bet >>14 would be their biggest fan. Me? I still wouldn't give a shit.

Hey! You heard >>36. Elvis is a man, not a band. I know he HAD a band, Scottie-somebody and some other guys from the 'Memphis Mafia'...but, technically, ELVIS IS NOT A BAND! He may have weighed as much as 3 or 4 people later in his career, but that dosen't count.

Four that I could possibly think of...
1. Pre Black Album Metallica. Black album is definately the turning point in their sound.
2. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Completely defined hip-hop, turntablism, and DJ culture.
3. Public Enemy. Their idea of taking a political or a social message to streets via the mainstream (MTV for example) is now copied by alot of groups out there.
4. Rage Against the Machine. Neo-Activism. Very good too... It's too bad they broke up. Very much like Public Enemy, but for the late 90's and for rock.

The Allman Brothers Band of course. Duane Allman was a very influental guitarist and still is, too bad the man died so young. Cream and Eric Clapton are also very good.
Black Sabbath, they virtually created the metal genre.
That and The Beatles "Helter Skelter" too.

Jaleco sound team, Capcom sound team, nintendo sound team. Oh, you meant world music not good music right? Okay then.
It's hard to say since I don't listen to the shit anymore but I'll lay down some names
Yes, the velvet underground has ROCK
The smiths were pretty good, sometimes annoying and sometimes amazing
Depeche Mode, though I never listened to the recent one (big fbi printed label thing on the case, not letting it touch my system after what sony did)
The Pixies easily
oh, and hall and oates, believe it.
I don't know if you can pick _the_ best band to happen to music. I think alot of different bands influenced alot of different genres of music in different ways.
But I would like to put out there... Iron Maiden.
Redifined the sound and are influencing great bands to this day. Not to mention still producing great albums putting on great shows to this very day. They most definately rule. (Let's forget that Blaze thing ever happened).
