Why do some video games (mostly 2D shooters) and action anime have relaxing elevator music during intense fight scenes? I've seen epic battles that have sleep-inducing music for some reason, as if to contrast desctruction with the easygoing.

As a street fighter fan I have to say I've often been dumbfounded by a fair portion of Street Fighter's music. I generally have to exclude SFII in this, but man everything past that can get a little weird at times.
If you are interested check out SF EX + alpha. It has some of the cheesiest elevator tracks.

I believe this is good, at times i want to feel like moving with kind of perfect timed techniques and supers. It's more like the jazzy music makes me calm and helps me enjoying the whole atmosphere.
But that doesn't make me hate Guily Gear's soundtrack, it fits.
And i think Street Fighter with metal music would be really wierd.

I liked the original SFII music over Super SFII, which sounds like everything has been remixed by an easy listening station.
