Good European and Asian bands

Name: Anonymous 2005-07-25 17:52

I am looking for a list of any good Asian bands. By Asia I mean Japan, Russia, India, China, ect. I found a list of jpop and/or jrock bands from http://www.projectj.net/ but I want to know if there is anymore. I am putting a radio show together and I want to have some good music put to gether. I am looking in the genres of rock, electronica, gothic and indy. Anything that sounds good and is not Hamasaki Ayumi. kthnxdie

Rurutia.
Look up her "R" Album.
It's a rare album - tell me if you are really intersted because personally, it's the greatest thing I've ever heard.

I often loop it for literally weeks on end.

All I live for is R....

Oh and also, Gackt/Malice Mizer is terrible.
And I'll listen to anything coming from Japan!  Even Hamasaki!
At least I know the language and will live there soon, making it  slighly better.  Sort of.

The Pillows though?

Almost as good as Rurutia.
If you can't find any Pillows directly, look up FLCL OSTs.  It's almost completly constructed of the Pillows, and it's all awesome.

lost in time is the hookiest guitar band i've ever heard asian or otherwise. start here when you get over the japan-band novelty.

fujifabric was building a good reputation until they debuted their first record; it was slightly disappointing. grab their eps and singles as they've got some soul, my friend. indeed.

the legendary eastern youth has been doing it brutally for years. imagine a band influenced by fugazi and yo la tengo fronted by an introspective fourty year old poet. throw an ex skinhead bassist and a drummer that hits his cymbals and drums really hard into the mix. albums are hit or miss, but the best of their achingly long discography include kanjusei otoseyo, kumo ni inuke koe, and several others which escape me at the moment (skip their split with cursive, it doesn't represent their finest work at all).

on the topic of indies legends, bloodthirsty butchers comes to mind. they've played an enormous amount of shows on the same bill with eastern youth.

now for a skeleton in the closet entry: kukikodan. cute, solid, beautiful and playful. very musically satisfying; everything sounds right about this band. they're a charming little jazz-pop guitar and piano band.

Stance punks has some awesome lyrics.

Asian kung-fu generation is a really great band too, and they've got quite the following.

Also, try RiverMaya from the philippines. They're pretty good for a filipino band. They sing in english, just so you know.

Every Little Thing

If you fail to put some THE YELLOW MONKEY and Susumu Hirasawa up then you might as well just not do it.  Try to avoid putting too much Jpop in there.  Also, try to get some Detsl, for your Russian quota.  'Tis funny Russian rap and is actually of some decent quality, I must say.

Blankey Jet City, one of the best japanese rock bands from the 90's.
other bands I'd recommend:
Gyogun Rend's, Mo'some Tonebender, or maybe some 80's japanese music like The Roosters, The Stalin or Unicorn.

My fav Japanese band is by far Supercar who kind of shift from light techno to soft rock.  Excellent stuff from Sapporo I believe.  Its really hard to find but get any and all that you can.

As for European bands, a bit farther than where you are trying to get stuff from I suppose, are the Cardigans.

Mew is a great danish band.

Second the SUPERCAR mention but they've been really slowing down the past few years.  If you like Yellow Monkey, might as well go fo Thee Machine Gun Elephant.  Early Dragon Ash (pre-2000ish) is indy but also a bit of rap in there too.  Last recommendation would be GO!GO!7188.  All Japanese.

Don't change these.
