I think Piper At the Gates of Dawn is their best and most underrated.
All of the dumb stoners always freak out about how their others are so beyond everything. I've always found Syd Barrett's songs to be far tripper than anything else.

yea syd was a genuine nutcase, he made some crazy music.. piper was their first and arguably their best
the wall and dark side are so cliche by this late year, but waters+gilmour is the real pink floyd... gilmore alone is off
waters+gilmour+barrett would have been great if it lasted

i think there most underrated album is either atom heart mother or meddel, but you are right in saying animals is under rated, because it definatly is. It's a shame since it's the best instumentals they ever made

I think Animals is also one of there more pessemistic and darker albums.

>>5 "obscured by clouds" is good in that it showcases that they could just sit down, jam and knock out something pretty good (in a basic way) in just a few days (iirc). It's very interesting to listen to in tandem with Dark Side of the moon (which came out a year later if I remember right).
But yeah, animals -- "dogs" in particular -- is my favorit album.

"You got to be able to pick out the easy meat / with your eyes closed. / Then moving in silently / down wind and out of sight.. / You've got to strike when the moment is right / without thinking. / And after a while / you can work on points for style / Like the club tie / and the firm handshake.. / A certain look in the eye and an easy smile. / You have to be trusted / by the people that you lie to..."
"And when you loose control / you'll reap the harvest you have sown. / And as the fear grows / the bad blood slows and turns to stone. // And it's too late to lose / the weight you used / to need to throw around. // So have a good drown / as you go down / all alone / Dragged down by the stone"
"Who was told what to do by the man / Who was broken by trained personnel / Who was fitted with collar and chain / Who was given a pat on the back // Who was breaking away from the pack // Who was only a stranger at home / Who was ground down in the end."
Dogs is an awesome track, Floyd needs to lighten up a bit on the bleak societal metaphor though ;) but I guess thats their "thing". The lyrics are so uniquely British, bloody brilliant as they say.

Animals has the songs I listen to the most at work, along with some from Wish You Were Here. Not that they are the best, or the most representative, or anything else. Maybe because their themes have so much to do with getting fucked over in nature and in society.

Animals is great; it's probably my favorite Pink Floyd album. I too love Pigs (Three Different Ones).
