I recently started listening to "Mombojó" (www.mombojo.com.br). They play a mixture of rock and samba (or was it rock and bossa nova?) Either way they're pretty cool.

Brazilian music? That's probably what they use for their --ng soap operas. Hate 'em.

Os Mutantes is good because of how awkward their music is.
What is Caetan Veloso like?

Pato fu rocks.
Oddly enough, I was first introduced to their music by the song "Made in Japan," a song sung entirely in Japanese.

Eumir Deodato... his jazz-rock version of Also Sprach Zarathustra simply rocks!

There are some names of different brazilian artists that you could try their styles:
Vinicius de Moraes, Nara Leão(Bossa Nova), Elegia(São Paulo Punk & Underground), Adriana Calcanhoto (nice female voice), Lenine (Exotic & psycholic lyrics), Chico Buarque (MasterPiece), Zelia Duncan (Lesbian brazilian style), Ivete Sangalo (Frevo Music)
