Nightwish Appreciation

Name: Tarage 2004-12-24 5:31

Well... I don't know how many people know of this band from Finland... but I for one enjoy them.

My favorite song is a tie between 10th Man Down (VERY Under rated) and I Wish I Had An Angel...

http link

They have some nice sound clips.

Yeah, I went to the concert when they came to Anaheim... boy did they rock...

So, any fans out there?

Once is probably their worst album. I dislike the gothic metal trend towards darkwave lately. Fucking drum machines have no place in metal. There are a few good songs on the album, but it was overall a dissapointment and a sign of things to come. Dream Theater walked down this path as well. Popularity will destroy them.

If you like Nightwish you'd probably like both Penumbra and Amaran. I find Nightwish very grating these days, I'm not sure why, If you look around, there's plenty of good female vox metal to be found.

I'm a sucker for grand, epic sounding songs, so Planet Hell is probably my favorite song by them. I also like most songs that they use both vocalists in.

Funny though, my first impulse when seeing world4ch was to start a metal related thread. Glad I got beat to it!

I liked kinship. Proberbly the first by Nightwish I ever heard.

I agree with #2. Many people were angry about the >style change< when "Century Child" came out (also every Nightwish-Album is different), but "Once" is really disappointing to those who liked the band from the beginning. Even the >best< songs "Wish I had an Angel" and "Ghost love score" do not reach the quality of former publications. Well this is the overall trend in the >scene<: less quality, more popularity (and sold records).

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-24 15:38

10th man down is fine, as is Ghost love score. I wish I had an angel on the other hand is crap. Funny how tastes differ.

Name: Kay 2004-12-24 15:56

Indeed. Well I named I wish I had an angel not because I like it that much, but it may have a bit more popularity-potential and some of my friends appreciated the song. My fault.

Saw them in concert awhile ago and I'm going to see them again soon :D I honestly don't know my favorite song. Maybe the entire album of Century Child. Or Ghost Love Score :B

Name: Film11 !7TXcUi5s9. 2004-12-24 18:33

All the songs from the Once album are excellent but I especially like Nemo and Creek Mary's Blood, the flutes (or whatever they are) and drums make an exquisite combination!

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-24 18:38

I saw them at their Budapest gig in, uh, I think it was October. It was simply awesome. Much love. :D

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-24 19:15

Crownless was the first track of theirs I ever heard. And still I love it.

Name: OMG LOL 2004-12-24 21:00

moondance and over the hill and far away for me. they also did a cover of a crimson tide song called deep blue see. it rocks but its only in live version.

Funny, I've been listening to Nightwish avidly since Oceanborn came out and Once is probably my favorite album from them. It's just as heavy, melodic and epic as anything they ever released. They put on an excellent show when I saw them in San Fran. Supposedly they're going to tour North America again next year with Sonata Arctica. Can't wait.

Name: Fiyerstorm 2004-12-25 3:06

NIGHTWISH!

My favorite band. :D

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-25 9:37

Rumors say that Sonata Arctica is even better than Nightwish.

Name: OMG LOL !uNJUZNN.ZE 2004-12-25 13:36

>17

sonata is straight power metal melodic while nightwish is power metal gothic melodic. i like both but sonata can get insanely fast and i love it. while the gothic style of nightwish suits me better some days.

Name: Charade 2004-12-25 14:48

this band reminds me of Dungeons&Dragons.
beware as they proceed to rock you with the holy gloves of metal.lol, no imo bands like this shouldnt exist :P

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-25 20:59

Nightwish sucks. Tarja sang for and American baka-like show. They sold out.

PD: Sonata Arctica sucks more than Stratovarious. Stick to Blind Guardian and Helloween.

Name: OMG LOL !uNJUZNN.ZE 2004-12-25 21:48

blindguardian is epic but not power metal and helloween is more old school power like gamma ray, dont mix everything up. i like all the style of power metal and you shouldnt die knowing only one style either.

and of all the power i prefere Rhapsody. thats just my taste and theres nothing more to discuss about it.

Name: soakrates 2004-12-26 17:20

Sonata Arctica is really cool, but sometimes they play up the Stratovarius influences a little too much and their ballads can get frustratingly cheesy.

Nightwish "sold out" now? Let me guess, Dimmu Borgir aren't "tr00" black metal anymore either, right? Give me a break.

Name: Xenos 2004-12-26 18:16

I relaly need to pick up some of their CDs. I stumbled upon them downloading random bands on direct connect. Think I found them in some gothic compilation. Also found Lacuna Coil that way. Really like that more classical or opera sound mixed with metal. I know some people may not like them now that they're popular and overplayed, but I still love Evanescene who somewhat have that sound, esepcially on their older CD which I think I may prefer.

As for Nightwish, one of the first songs that kept staying on my playlist was Gethsemane.

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-27 18:57

I've walked out in the middle of Sonata Arctica's gig in a pretty small club (didn't want to miss the last bus home) and they had just finished a song and the exit was right next the stage and their vocalist saw me leaving and said something like "well he obviously didn't like that song". So basically you could say I've had hot mansex with him.

Like always, Nightwish's older material is better than the new stuff. It's the rule of thumb in metal if one wishes to remain true and grim.

Name: Anonymous 2004-12-28 19:20

Bleh.. "sell out" and "being true".. yeah right.

Anyway, I still think Wishmaster is Nightwish's best album. The newest one has a few good songs, but overall it's too "opera-like" to really spark my interest. I just prefer my Kinslayer.

Not always true. Each Symphony X album is better than the last one.

To tell the truth I was quite disappointed with their last album, Once. The only songs that are listenable are Dark Chest of Wonders, I Wish I Had an Angel & Creek Mary's Blood, the rest is just them repeating themselves over and over again. Really uninspired stuff, it looks almost like self-parody, perhaps - taking the interpolated essence of "what a typical Nightwish song is like" and just playing around with this new (?) knowledge pro-style, not inventing anything new and somewhat simplifying the sound on the way, perhaps aiming to achieve greater appeal to simpler minds...
Really strange, as I think the previous one, Century Child, is the best of their's.

NEMO, FOREVER

Nightwish > Evanescence

Name: ZeroKun 2005-01-03 23:24

Yeah, I love them, especially the first album. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite song, then prolly Dead to the World.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-04 3:43 (sage)

Nemo = suxx. Both Ocean Soul & Feel for You (Century Child) were similar to it, except 1000 times better each.
Evanescence? Phew. Cheap pseudo-"goth" inclined pop music with a vocal that conjures the images of nothing else but a working chainsaw. Don't put them in one line yet, for I think there's still hope for Night's.

Name: Faith 2005-01-06 9:03

Tuomas is God.

Happened to listen to them since their very first album. It was a nice change from the usual dark and depressing gothic/doom stuff. But, each next album was a big step towards the worse. Repetitive, repetitive, repetitive... This operatic fairy-tale crap - not so emphasized on the Angels Fall First - is sickening in the long run. In the short run too.

Too bad, they had a potential, now they have popularity and hordes of omfg-I'm-so-goth-and-cool fanboys/fangirls in cheap T-shirts.

As for Finnish metal, Lordi >>>>> Nightwish > Him.

Lordi ownz! :D

Name: Shade !piGNeTKu7c 2005-01-16 7:36

LORDI? Ewww~ It can only be called PITIFUL.

Nightwish so very rocks. Once is probably the best alum from them, though Wishmaster does get very close. I didn't like Oceanborn very much... :\

My favorite songs are Ghost Love Score and Ever Dream. Period.

Name: Anonymous 2005-01-20 13:52 (sage)

Nightwish is so weak

Name: cute_little_vampy 2005-01-21 9:11

Someone know Tarot, the sideproject of the... let me think... guitar player? You know, the only cool looking guy in the band...
they're really good!

Name: Johnny 37 2005-01-22 17:29

Nigthwish fails at music!

Name: Anonymous 2005-06-12 13:15

To put it simply:

Nightwish > Tarot > Sonata Arctica > Within Temptation > Evanescence > Lordi

Did I miss something? ;)

Name: Anonymous 2005-06-14 20:39
