Around 550 years later the Mosque of Omar was built on that site, opposite the southern courtyard of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in the Muristan.

Omar refused to pray in the church not because it was unsuitable for prayers but so that there would be no conflict later as to whether the church has now been turned into a mosque. In other words, Omar respected the status of the church and wanted it to remain a church.

Many churches in England have been turned into mosques and/or Islamic cultural centres. No one regards this as an insult to Christianity or Islam.

So, no, today, I do not want to write a long-winded cheong hei article. I just want Muslims to reflect on this and not see everything as an insult to Islam. So what if all religions share one prayer room or hall? Do we not all pray to the same God? And if Muslims subscribe to the doctrine “there is no god but God” then for sure we all pray to the same God -- just that we do so in different ways.

I have always found these Multi Faith Prayer Rooms in UK airports to be very convenient. There was even a time where I have (had) to pray alongside a lady who was presumably a Christian. It did not bother me or her.

BTW I am a Muslim.

Before they had these Multi Faith Prayer Rooms, we were allowed to use their Chapels to pray.

If it is labelled surau then i personally think it is wrong for non muslims to use the surau. But ; if it is labelled multi faith hall/room , then there is no arguement here. And , most prayer hall/rooms in commercial building are labelled surau. So non muslim must not use the surau. All this must be adhered as the process of maintaining harmony among all religion.

YM RP,

ANY Muslim who complains and objects to sharing prayer space with another religion should be ashamed of himself/herself.

Other religions have shown their kindness and generosity to Islam.

I know of a case in an overseas instituition where Muslims were in the minority and thus did not have any place to pray.

The Christians found out about the problems which the Muslims were facing and offered to share their own prayer rooms with the Muslims.

Also for something closer to Manchester, check out the following link.

I could probably come up with more examples but I don't think it will make any difference to some so-called pious Muslims.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-21953899 is relevant to the article. Some are bellyaching about the surau losing sanctity and note these are the very people who occupy senior positions in the hierarchy. It seems they interpret spiritual matters along the lines of superficial surface of the letter and not the spirit. I recall a number of times when we had Muslim friends visiting our government provided residence and they found it absolutely not a problem to perform ablution and follow up with prayer. I recall my Dad enthusiastically showing his guests the direction of the kiblat and hushing us so that we kept our boisterous volume to a moderate level. He even had a prayer mat kept aside for that purpose. The spare place at home for the purpose of facing the direction of kiblat coincidentally faced our prayer shrine. Yet not even one Muslim brother of sister objected. They didn't accuse my Dad of anything ulterior. When my dad apologized, they would calm him down and assure him that it was not a problem. He even purchased broilers for festive occasions from a Chinese and the man would ask him "Mau Melayu potong?" and my Dad would affirm and the Pachik would be beckoned over to slaughter. Till today we follow his example by keeping a prayer mat for the Muslim guest who may find the surau a bit far.
