Action anime with strong male lead?

I'm looking for an action type anime with a strong male protagonist, whom is not always being saved by girls. In just about every action anime I've found so far, the main character starts out extremely weak and is always running away from people, or being saved by girls. Also, in most of these you find that he has some "secret power" within him, but I honestly don't feel like watching 20 episodes just to see a good fight scene. I really enjoyed Death Note because the protagonist, Light, was exceptionally smart and it made the story very interesting. Samurai Champloo was awesome, enough said. Kenichi was decent but he's a major pussy until the very last episode which was extremely annoying. Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls was close. But still, the main guy was always being saved by girls. Just please remember that I'm not looking for anything with stupidly strong females, or a main character who barely talks to a girl and turns red and shit like that.
