recreational memorization

It can be an interesting hobby.  I've heard that before writing and record keeping was common, people would memorize shitloads of things such as fireside legends.  Even now you've got weirdos memorizing hundreds of digits of pi or religious texts.

But as a recreation, there some things worth memorizing.  If nothing else, you can impress yourself that you were actually capable of remembering the stuff.

basic addition facts from 1+1 to 9+9
basic multiplication facts from 1*1 to 9*9 (any schoolboy should be able to do this, but you might attempt memorizing up to 16*16)
square numbers up to 20 squared
cubed numbers up to 20 cubed
powers of 2 up to 2 to the power of 10

states and capitals in the US, Australia, others
nicknames of the US states
world's largest 20 or so islands
seas of the world
rivers of the world
mountain ranges of the world

I try to remember exactly how the junk on my desk is laid out and what's on it during boring lectures. Fun enough.
