I have to say, that Mona Lisa chick isn't very good looking.  Kind of bleh.

People were "uglier" back then. They didn't wear as much makeup and now we've evolved 500 years of beauty.

Mona Lisa isn't meant to be beautiful in the 'normal' sense. The whole appeal of the painting is that it is one of the first examples of an artist having a 'fetish' and expressing it (he obviously founds him/her beautiful and worthy of a portrait). It heralded the cult of individuality in visual art that we all know and love.
