Most people with a spinal cord injury are on a bowel program. What type of bowel program will depend on whether they have a reflexive or flaccid bowel. People who are paralyzed from the waist down typically have a flaccid bowel...meaning the muscles that propel the bowels do not work and have no tone. Therefore, they usually need to assist their bowel movements with a suppository and/or manual stimulation from the finger or other type of device to help remove the fecal material.
