Religion once was important. It helped spawn society, language, architecture, morality, and a large amount of customs. Nowadays, we are flourishing without the use of religion, yet it is still something that is involved in everyday life. We have evolved past it. Science explains everything while society and morality have become common knowledge. I see no reason for people to believe in the fairy tale aspect of religion any more.
