Didn't anybody take Human Geography freshman year? Americans have variations of English words because our languages evolved seperately from each other. America was colonized by the British, who then left after we won our independence. As a result we became isolated from each other for three hundred or so years. Since then we came up with our own pronunciations, seperate from British. We also had different vocabularies because of inventions and experiences that happened seperately, like the automobile or the elevator. It is only recently that we have discovered the vast differences of our dialects, because the world has become so much closer.

Not to mention, there are tons of dialects of english. The "modern" one spoken in England isn't even proper English if compared to Elizabethan English.
