The best time to buy it was sometime in 2001 (I believe May of that year). Ever since then, gold has been steadily rising in price and value, and went from around $220/troy oz to over $1400/ troy oz (USD), and it will continue to grow.

If that is expensive for you, I'd recommend silver as an alternative, it's currently hovering around $30/troy oz (USD) at the moment.

Why Invest in Physical Gold?

For centuries, investors and collectors have owned physical gold for a variety of reasons. Gold is:

• Considered a "safe haven" asset - a potential hedge against inflation and an eroding dollar

• Recognized as a monetary and financial asset worldwide

• Part of a portfolio diversification strategy recommended by many experts

• Able to be passed on to children and grandchildren

• A tangible reminder of past achievements and civilizations

• Setting records - some experts believe gold may see new highs in the future

 Diversify Now

With today's economic uncertainty, adding gold to your portfolio has become a recognized diversification strategy - serving as a potential hedge against inflation and a declining dollar.

copper is a better way of storing wealth than gold, it doesn't corrode easily and it is valuable enough per kilo to hide significant amounts of wealth easily and securely, it also has far more applications than gold, even if tomorrow someone invented cheap graphene superconducting wires or something that replaced copper for wiring it would still have countless other uses

as a trade commodity its value will steadily increase due to resource depletion yet there is much less speculation over its value than gold or silver

furthermore, post-apocalypse, if you start trying to trade gold dust for a sack of potatoes it will raise suspicion, a bunch of thugs will come to your house and rob you. People will be expected to pull cables from the ground and melt it down to trade for medicine and so forth, and it is more secure to trade small amounts of wealth over a long time, they will give you an honest trade so you come back with more copper.

Swiss lost billions from gold

GENEVA - Switzerland's central bank says it lost billions last year amid a sharp drop in gold prices, and it therefore will not pay dividends to Bern or the Swiss cantons.

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) said yesterday it expected to report a loss of nine billion Swiss francs last year, according to provisional figures.

But it had lost far more on the value of its gold holdings, which shed 15 billion francs during a year when prices for the precious metal dropped by 28 per cent.
