I have to ask you a question: what is "equal" supposed to mean when you're comparing two people? I seriously can't think of a single situation where any two people are truly equal. Even in the most rigidly defined cultures, there are always variations. We're not machines. "Equality" has always seemed to me like an impossible ideal.

Under things like the American Declaration of Independance, I assume equal means something along the lines of entitled to equal treatment under the law etc.

However, it was written in a time when slavery was still common, and Jefferson himself owned slaves, so how he thought this could be true I don't know.  How it could also be a self-evident truth is also a little strange.
