It depends. There used to be spam on 4chan that lead to a zombie network that hijacked the computers to attack 4chan. That's kind of stopped after the captchas for the most part. Then you've got programs like LOIC and other programs that people use/make to DDoS the site. The standard way is everyone downloads LOIC, targets the site and lets loose.
