As for Thanksgiving, it's commercialized like all holidays. Also, it was about stuffing your face even more so back then since the Thanksgiving feats had a span of three days, if not more.

It's like with my grandma. There was no record of her birth and no one knows her real birthday, but we still have an arbitrary fixed date that we use as her birthday.

Besides, fictional characters don't have real birthdays.
