I hate to tell you this, though you may or may not understand. But you must sacrifice all that you are (as you must now realize all that you are doing is bringing you all that you are receiving) in order to do what you aren't yet doing in order to receiving what you aren't yet receiving. If you are cruel, be kind; if you are callous and inconsiderate, be caring and considerate. If you ignore, pay attention; if you neglect, be attentive; if you abandon, stand committed; if you forget, recall.
Attention, Communication, Affection, and Cooperation. Those four things should move you closer towards recognizing self-respect = respecting others and gratitude = appreciating what you DO, HAVE, and ARE.
This isn't something that you can be told or taught, it's something that has to be lived in order to be understood. Make the mistakes you know you are going to make, not so you can realize you are a fool for having done what you knew would cause you grief and shame, but to recover from that grief and shame by learning what you've never done before. Do what you don't feel like doing, recognize what appears strange and unique as curious and mysterious. Realize that moral pursuits and self-pursuits are one in the same, only sublimated in order to avoid narcissism and megalomania and pride in ego.

Losing is winning.
Self-preservation is good when in solitude, but do you wish to remain alone? Ergo, there is a necessity for something else. You must not only consider yourself, but others in your decisions.

And that is Altruism.

There is much more info to research, many more misadventures for you to take. i would suggest starting small with minor successes and build upon those until you become callous to your shame and fear of the unknown. In other words, for the rest of your life.
