How can you belong to a religion?

Human psychology denotes that every mind has the potential to perceive things differently, so how do we know we're worshiping the same God? An example of this would be the different factions of Christians going around, some who love all creatures great and small and others who are anti-gay etc.

I went to church expecting to see like-minded people and all I got were a bunch of simple, ugly, fat old women.

I've even been called a "predator". O.O...but all humans have eyes in the front of their face...that's the denotation OF a predator.
